What Is a Vastu Score and How Does It Work?
A Vastu score is a single number between 0 and 100 that tells you how well your home's layout aligns with Vastu Shastra principles. It is the fastest way to compare two properties or to see whether a change helped. This guide explains what goes into a Vastu score, how to read yours, and what it cannot tell you.
What a Vastu Score Measures
A Vastu score answers one question: how well does the use of each room match the directional zone that room occupies?
It is not a prediction about luck or fortune. It is a compliance measure — a structured comparison between where your rooms actually sit and where Vastu Shastra recommends each type of room should be. A kitchen in the South-East scores well because South-East is the fire zone. The same kitchen in the North-East scores poorly because North-East is the water and clarity zone, and fire there is a conflict.
The General Idea Behind Scoring
Most Vastu scoring systems follow a common structure:
- Overlay a directional grid on the floor plan (8, 16 or 32 zones).
- Identify which zone each room falls in.
- Rate each room-zone pairing — is this zone good, acceptable, neutral or bad for this room's use?
- Combine the ratings into an overall number.
The simplest way to think about it: each room-zone pairing is rated on a scale from very good (the zone strongly supports this activity) through good, acceptable, down to bad (the zone actively conflicts with this use).

The overall Vastu score rolls these individual ratings into a single 0–100 number. A higher score means more rooms are in zones that support their use; a lower score means more conflicts.
Why Room Importance Matters
Not all rooms affect daily life equally. A master bedroom and a kitchen influence wellbeing far more than a store room. Most scoring systems give high-impact rooms like the master bedroom, kitchen and main entrance more weight than secondary spaces.
This means a conflict in the kitchen moves the score more than a conflict in a spare bathroom. It also means fixing the kitchen first is always higher leverage than fixing a utility room.
Why the Zone Grid Matters
The directional zone grid is established by finding the centre of the plan and anchoring the compass to the confirmed North direction. This means:
Everything depends on getting North right. Rotate the same floor plan 90° and every zone assignment changes. An incorrect North direction is the single most common cause of a misleading Vastu score.

How to Read Your Vastu Score
Scores are best understood in bands rather than as precise values:

Treat a 3–5 point difference between two homes as noise. Treat a 15–20 point difference as meaningful. And always look at the per-room breakdown alongside the headline number — a score of 60 caused by one badly placed toilet is a very different situation from a 60 caused by five rooms all sitting slightly wrong.
What the Score Cannot Tell You
- It assumes your plan is to scale. An inaccurate sketch produces an inaccurate score.
- It only scores rooms you identify. Unmarked spaces carry no weight.
- It ignores everything outside the plan — slope, roads, water bodies, neighbouring structures and plot-level factors.
- It is not a prediction. It is a compliance measure, not a forecast about your life or finances.
- Different Vastu systems score differently. A score from one platform is not directly comparable to a score from another because the underlying zone rules and weighting differ.
When a Vastu Score Is Most Useful
Comparing properties before purchase

Measuring the effect of a change
Swapped which bedroom is the master? Applied a room-use change? Re-run the analysis and check whether the score actually improved. Without measurement you are guessing.
Prioritising what to fix
The per-room breakdown shows which rooms pull the score down most. Fix those first. Generally that means starting with the master bedroom, kitchen and main entrance before touching secondary spaces.
Improving Your Vastu Score
The highest-leverage changes are predictable:
- Start with the most important rooms in the worst zones. Fixing the master bedroom or kitchen moves the score far more than fixing a store room.
- Prefer use changes over structural changes. Swapping which room serves as the master bedroom costs nothing; moving a wall does not.
- Apply Vastu remedies where relocation is impossible. Element balancing, colour, weight and placement adjustments can improve a room's rating without construction.
- Re-run the analysis after each change so you are measuring rather than assuming.
