Vedic Vastu: Vastu as set out in the classical Sanskrit texts, as distinct from the many modern simplifications of it.
Vastu Purusha Mandala: The square grid, with the Vastu Purusha figure laid across it, that classical Vastu uses as the reference frame for a building. Its subdivisions carry the 45 energies.
Panchatatva: The five elements — earth, water, fire, air and space — each associated with directions, and balanced against one another in a Vastu reading.
Brahmasthan: The centre of a building's plan, treated in classical Vastu as its most sensitive zone and traditionally kept open and unloaded.
Padvinyas: The act of laying the Mandala grid over a plan, dividing it into pads — commonly 64 or 81 — that are then read individually.
Marma points: The sensitive intersection points of the Mandala grid, which classical texts advise against loading with heavy structure.
Vastu Dosha: A defect in a building relative to Vastu principles — most often a room or function sitting in a direction the tradition assigns to something else.
Vastu remedies: Corrections applied to a Vastu Dosha. Most are non-structural, which is why analysis is worth doing on an existing home and not only on a drawing.
